History

The origins of Gremi de Fabricants de Sabadell go back to the old Gremi de Paraires de Sabadell, founded in 1559. The support Gremi de Fabricants de Sabadell gives to member companies takes the form, principally, of representing and acting as a spokesperson for their interests before local, national and international organisations. The Guild has often proved effective in this task, a clear example being in 1962, when floods affected many local businesses. Throughout its history, Gremi de Fabricants de Sabadell has played an important role in designing and implementing local initiatives in both the economic and cultural fields.

In 1881, many guild members helped to found Banco Sabadell, and the new bank's offices were established on guild premises. In 1886, Cámara Oficial de Comercio e Industria de Sabadell was founded, and the guild also sponsored the establishment in 1902 of the Escuela Industrial de Artes y Oficios to train operators for local industry. The school was later absorbed by the Administración de Enseñanzas Profesionales.

In 1908, the guild set up the Acondicionamiento Público Municipal and the Laboratorio Químico, whilst in 1918 the Docks were established as large warehouses to store wool and other raw materials for the textile industry. In 1919, the two were merged and given official status. In 1917, the guild set up SAT, the Mutua Sabadellense de Accidentes del Trabajo , and it also took part in the establishment of CASSA, the Compañía de Aguas de Sabadell , in 1949.

In 1947, the Institut Sallarès i Pla was established to promote technical, economic and social studies, bringing together young business people and playing an important role in preparing the new generations.

More recent developments include the establishment in 1985 of the Escola Textil d'Arts i Oficis and the promotion in 1989 of ESDI, the Escola Superior de Disseny, attached to Universidad Ramon Llull. In 1990, the guild supported the establishment of Prolino, bringing together linen spinning, weaving and finishing companies, welcoming the new group as a member of its organisation.

Today, el Gremi de Fabricants de Sabadell is a business association whose mission is to defend the interests of the textile industry in the zone and to foster economic and social development in its area of activity.

The guild also carries out important work in promoting and assisting businesses through its advisory, information and promotional services.

Gremi de Fabricants de Sabadell brings together textile enterprises, mostly in the Sabadell area and through FITEXLAN, the Federación de la Industria Textil Lanera, leads corporative work in the Spanish woollen sector and participates directly in the activities of the employers' organisation the Consejo Intertextil Español.
